Make video production a commodity!

Facts

chain

1. Diffusing videos on the web has become a commodity through platforms like Youtube, Dailymotion, Seesmic, Mogulus (live)…
2. Demand for Professional videos/content is booming : corporate videos, informative videos, educational videos, PR videos, Marketing videos, Buzz videos… Every single company will need to produce at least one video for their own website.
3. Producing videos has clearly not yet become a commodity. THAT IS THE MISSING POINT IN THE ONLINE VIDEO BOOM

So here’s the customer pain we’re trying to figure out even if it’s not express because not already offered on the market.

Why are Videos still complicated and expensive to produce?

The video production market is over crowded, there’s no transparency about pricing/quality and, at the end, the costs are really high (Traditional production companies charge you for their inefficiency + margin on a freelance / Agencies charge you for their creativity on top of production companies…).

Those who need to produce videos need fast and reliable information about hiring the best profiles to produce their content at best cost.

On Youtube, Veoh and all these platforms, how do you find the good ones?

Imagine how great it would be to find a reliable filmmaker to get footage abroad without spending tons of money sending someone over. Imagine how amazing it would be to find the perfect creative guys to produce a viral video ad from their past experience. Imagine you’re a baker and want to find all the videographers in your area and, more specifically, the ones who create videos for bakeries…

At Videoagency we are clearly convinced that the video product market needs more transparency to help the online video production market explode in the coming years.

Commoditizing the video production market by creating transparency is our Vision. So that’s why we’re creating the biggest filmmaker network in the World with currently 4000+ filmmakers in 80 countries and more than 2000 cities and counting.

We want to become a central point between the ones who need to produce videos and the ones who produce videos.

I would love to get feedback from you about this?

Internet opportunities for independent filmmakers

A recent conference moderated by Scott Kirsner (Editor of CinemaTech) outlines how independent directors, producers and filmmakers can navigate what he refers to as the “emerging landscape of digital cinema and digital distribution”.

A great insight for filmmakers to see the opportunities and challenges that the internet is bringing to their industry. Below are two videos covering the key points made at the conference:

Other participants to the conference:
Ted Mundorff, CEO of Landmark Theatres
Lance Weiler, founder of Workbook Project
Josh Green, VP Distribution at Emerging Pictures
Russell Wintner, President at WinterTek Inc
Christian Zak, VP Indepedent Feature Services at Technicolor

Let’s Ask Google and Youtube a few questions : Marissa (Mayer), Matt (Cutts) if you are around, please talk to us… (Part 2)

Now moving on to my second discussion topic:

2/ What about indexing videos into Google Universal ? Are you going to give preference to the people who upload onto your platform?

Most of us who are interested in videos and/or SEO have noticed in these last few weeks a big move in video integration into search queries…Particularily new SERPs with video thumbnails situated before text links.

I have seen many examples of this:

- Some videos come from Youtube and you can play them directly in the SERP
- Others come from Youtube, but you cannot play them in the SERP
- A few come from others sites with thumbnails and some even without
- More impressively, some of them even come from video websites that are not big platforms

I would be curious to know what kind of results you guys are getting on this? Do people clicking on the videos? How, when you’re a video website, can you be indexed by Google?

Last but not least THE big questions concerning Video market on Internet is:

1. Are you going to prioritize SERPs videos uploaded on Youtube in your Algorythm?

If Yes: (bearing in mind your ToS - mentioned above) that would mean that you will be giving more exposure to content producers who accept to license their content to you for free?

If No: What type of commitment can you offer to content producers? A Chinese wall? That could prove to be difficult!!!!

In terms of text content the situation is clear, you were not hosting it and thus got a free license. Now, with video it has become more ambiguous…

So to sum up briefly!

Google is moving towards Universal which strongly impacts SERPs.

This also impacts all online video market as videos uploaded on Youtube or Google could be better indexed thus forcing producers to upload their content on Youtube…

In the meantime, uploading videos on Youtube does not allow producers to make money out of it and more over gives Youtube a free license the producer’s video content…

So in the future, if you are a producer and you want exposure, you will probably have to produce without the intention of making money…Fame is probably the future :-)

But one thing is true, since its beginnings, the SEO game has been very closed and now with the development of Google Universal we are finally starting to open up the game and create new, exciting opportunities…

To Google : “Don’t be evil”. Don’t repeat the mistakes that MSFT did. Be transparent and share your vision even if you’re not sure about it but give directions to the market. Don’t try to dominate every single market.

A big thank you to our filmmakers!

At the beginning of last week, we sent an email to all the filmmakers in our network asking them how THEY want VideoAgency.tv to work. Over the past days we went through all the responses (and there were many!) and it has given us a clear idea of what we need to do.

We were overwhelmed by your enthusiasm and helpfulness. We received responses from filmmakers in 22 different countries and they gave us a lot of insight on how the freelance filmmaker market works now as well as how it can be improved.

I would like to thank each and every one of you personally for your insight and suggestions. We are going to work feverishly over the next weeks to launch the perfect product for you!

If there is anything else you would like to add, I am all ears: thomas@trivop.com

Congrats to TurnHere!

Hey Congrats to TurnHere (Brad and his team) who secured a first round of financing yesterday of $7.5M from Hearst Corporation and Venrock!

TurnHere is a company I have watched since their launch. Their learning curve and experience, acquired, in terms of global production, is not far from ours here at VideoAgency with Trivop. I am convinced about TurnHere’s offering.

They have developed an impressive network of filmmakers and can organize massive production efforts at low cost for the clients everywhere (B2B). Their clients are big brands like Condenet, Intercontinental, Simon & Schulster…

They also organize the distribution of these videos on big platforms.

I heard and talked with some American VCs who had met TurnHere and I think that Hearst Corp. is definitely a good investor for a company like TurnHere.

Why ?

Because it makes sense from an industrial point of view. Hearst is one of the biggest US publishers and Mr. William Randolph Hearst III is so convinced about videos (as we are) that they could really use all TurnHere’s filmmaker network to efficiently produce videos for Hearst and grow a massive inventory faster than their competitors! TurnHere will obviously benefit from it and gain a very strong position on the US market.

I watched the interview that Mr William Randolph Hearst III gave to beet.tv a year ago (he invested personally to seed the company and now his great group). If you don’t know Hearst you should have a look to their website. It’s an empire!

So we say think that TurnHere was a proof of concept to Hearst i.e. Videos on their website are very valuable and the added value from TurnHere is good. TurnHere understood the customer pain: their clients don’t know how to produce and need inventories fast. When I talk to big guys in US they are hot about videos and Internet. It will be the same soon in Europe… And more over because video will totally be part of any SEO strategy and visibility. That’s why SEO Video is becoming a part of e-marketing.

TurnHere, Trivop and Spotrunner (which acquired Globeshooter a few weeks ago and have over 1200 filmmakers now) are the only 3 companies in the world with their own filmmaker networks.

Having a crowded filmmaker network is really becoming a highly valuable asset!

Why ?

Because I totally agree with Brad that every website will have to publish a video on their website and they will look for easy solutions with affordable prices… A one-stop-shopping place.

The next big production company in the world will be a company dedicated to producing videos for the Internet and TurnHere could probably be the one with a few others :-)

Here are more videos by TurnHere.

Here is an interview with Brad.
